The Source of Modern Garden Water Fountains

Source Modern Garden Water Fountains 076390034910305.jpg Hundreds of ancient Greek records were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. He undertook the beautification of Rome to make it into the model capital of the Christian world. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a desolate Roman aqueduct which had transported fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the bidding of the Pope. Building a mostra, a grandiose celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains located in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the modified aqueduct he had reconstructed.

Garden Water Fountains Recorded by History

Towns and communities relied on functional water fountains to funnel water for cooking, washing, and cleaning up from local sources like ponds, channels, or creeks. In the days before electric power, the spray of fountains was driven by gravity alone, commonly using an aqueduct or water supply located far away in the nearby mountains.Garden Water Fountains Recorded History 076390034910305.jpg The beauty and spectacle of fountains make them ideal for historic monuments. The contemporary fountains of today bear little resemblance to the very first water fountains. The first accepted water fountain was a stone basin created that was used as a receptacle for drinking water and ceremonial functions. Rock basins as fountains have been recovered from 2000 B.C.. The earliest civilizations that utilized fountains relied on gravity to drive water through spigots. These historic fountains were created to be functional, commonly situated along reservoirs, creeks and waterways to supply drinking water. Beasts, Gods, and Spiritual figures dominated the very early decorative Roman fountains, starting to appear in about 6 BC. The impressive aqueducts of Rome delivered water to the incredible public fountains, most of which you can visit today.
