The History of Outdoor Water Fountains

The translation of hundreds of ancient Greek documents into Latin was commissioned by the scholarly Pope Nicholas V who ruled the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. In order to make Rome deserving of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope decided to embellish the beauty of the city. Restoration of the Acqua Vergine, a desolate Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the behest of the Pope. Building a mostra, an imposing commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the spot where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.

Contemporary Sculpture in Ancient Greece

Sculptors adorned the lavish columns and archways with renderings of the gods until the time came to a close and more Greeks had begun to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred; at that time, it became more accepted for sculptors be paid to show everyday individuals as well.Contemporary Sculpture Ancient Greece 14774576666905.jpg Portraiture became prevalent as well, and would be welcomed by the Romans when they defeated the Greeks, and quite often affluent households would commission a representation of their progenitors to be placed inside their grand familial burial tombs. It is amiss to state that the arts had one function during the course of The Classical Greek period, a time of innovative advancement during which the use of sculpture and various other art forms changed. Greek sculpture is perhaps enticing to us all at present seeing that it was an avant-garde experiment in the historic world, so it does not make a difference whether its original purpose was religious zeal or artistic enjoyment.
