Early Water Delivery Techniques in Rome

Early Water Delivery Techniques Rome 14774576666905.jpg Prior to 273, when the very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was made in Roma, residents who dwelled on hillsides had to journey further down to collect their water from natural sources. When aqueducts or springs weren’t easily accessible, people living at raised elevations turned to water drawn from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill via the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. Throughout the length of the aqueduct’s channel were pozzi, or manholes, that gave access. The manholes made it easier to maintain the channel, but it was also possible to use buckets to extract water from the aqueduct, as we observed with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he operated the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he passed away. Apparently, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to satisfy his needs. Fortunately, the aqueduct sat just below his residence, and he had a shaft opened to give him accessibility.

The Source of Today's Outdoor Fountains

Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of old classic Greek texts into Latin. In order to make Rome worthy of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope decided to enhance the beauty of the city. At the behest of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was renovated starting in 1453. The ancient Roman custom of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. The present-day site of the Trevi Fountain was once occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and constructed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains found in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the altered aqueduct he had reconstructed.
