When and Where Did Water Fountains Emerge?

Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of old classical Greek texts into Latin. He undertook the beautification of Rome to turn it into the model capital of the Christian world. Beginning in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent reconstruction at the bidding of the Pope. Building a mostra, an imposing commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti undertook the construction of a wall fountain in the spot where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually enabled it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.Garden Water Fountain Engineers History 2479072229404673.jpg

He methodically recorded his findings in his now famed notebooks about his investigations into the forces of nature and the qualities and motion of water. Early Italian water feature designers transformed private villa settings into innovative water showcases complete with symbolic meaning and natural charm by combining creativity with hydraulic and horticultural experience. The humanist Pirro Ligorio brought the vision behind the splendors in Tivoli and was distinguished for his skill in archeology, architecture and garden design. For the many estates close to Florence, other fountain engineers were well versed in humanist subject areas as well as classical technical texts, masterminding the extraordinary water marbles, water highlights and water humor.
