Original Water Supply Techniques in Rome

Previous to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was established in Rome, residents who dwelled on hills had to travel even further down to collect their water from natural sources. Throughout this time period, there were only two other techniques capable of offering water to elevated areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. Starting in the sixteenth century, a new approach was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean portions to deliver water to Pincian Hill. Pozzi, or manholes, were made at regular intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. During the some 9 years he owned the residence, from 1543 to 1552, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi utilized these manholes to take water from the channel in containers, though they were initially built for the intent of cleaning and maintaining the aqueduct. The cistern he had built to gather rainwater wasn’t sufficient to meet his water requirements. Thankfully, the aqueduct sat below his residence, and he had a shaft opened to give him accessibility.
