The Results of the Norman Invasion on Anglo Saxon Garden Design

The arrival of the Normans in the second half of the eleventh century irreparably improved The Anglo-Saxon lifestyle. The talent of the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons' in architecture and farming at the time of the conquest. But yet there was no time for home life, domesticated design, and adornment until the Normans had conquered the whole region. Because of this, castles were cruder constructions than monasteries: Monasteries were usually significant stone buildings located in the biggest and most fertile valleys, while castles were built on windy crests where their inhabitants devoted time and space to projects for offense and defense. Peaceful pursuits such as gardening were out of place in these destitute citadels. Berkeley Castle is probably the most intact model in existence today of the early Anglo-Norman form of architecture. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time period. A significant terrace serves as a hindrance to invaders who would attempt to mine the walls of the building. A scenic bowling green, covered in grass and bordered by battlements cut out of an ancient yew hedge, creates one of the terraces.

Where did Landscape Fountains Come From?

The dramatic or decorative effect of a fountain is just one of the purposes it fulfills, in addition to supplying drinking water and adding a decorative touch to your property.

From the onset, outdoor fountains were soley meant to serve as functional elements.Landscape Fountains Come From? 2479072229404673.jpg Inhabitants of urban areas, townships and small towns used them as a source of drinking water and a place to wash up, which meant that fountains needed to be connected to nearby aqueduct or spring. Up to the late nineteenth century, water fountains had to be near an aqueduct or reservoir and higher than the fountain so that gravity could make the water flow downwards or jet high into the air. Fountains were an excellent source of water, and also served to decorate living areas and memorialize the artist. Bronze or stone masks of wildlife and heroes were frequently seen on Roman fountains. To replicate the gardens of paradise, Muslim and Moorish garden planners of the Middle Ages introduced fountains to their designs. The fountains found in the Gardens of Versailles were intended to show the power over nature held by King Louis XIV of France. The Popes of the 17th and 18th centuries were extolled with baroque style fountains made to mark the place of entry of Roman aqueducts.

Indoor plumbing became the key source of water by the end of the 19th century thereby limiting urban fountains to mere decorative elements. Impressive water effects and recycled water were made possible by switching the power of gravity with mechanical pumps.

Modern-day fountains function mostly as decoration for community spaces, to honor individuals or events, and compliment entertainment and recreational gatherings.Use Garden Water Fountains Water Elements 14774576666905.jpg

Bernini's father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately transferred in Rome, to thoroughly show their artwork in the form of community water fountains and water features. An excellent employee, the young Bernini received compliments and patronage of various popes and important artists. He was initially recognized for his sculpture. Working seamlessly with Roman marble, he used a base of experience in the historical Greek architecture, most notably in the Vatican. Although many artists impacted his artistic endeavors, Michelangelo inspired him the most.
